The RACE
Known as "The World's Toughest Row," The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge is an annual rowing competition covering 3,000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Every December, the shores of San Sebastian De La Gomera invite row boats and their iron-willed crew to embark westward to the peaceful Caribbean Island of Antigua.
For three months, I will need to leverage every ocean survival technique in the book. My small vessel will stock enough food to maintain a diet of 5000+ calories per day. These calories will fuel my body to overcome the harsh realities of being at sea, such as dodging larger ships, braving unpredictable weather conditions, and sleeping only two-hour shifts to avoid drifting off course. On the other hand, not only will I get to battle waves, I will have the thrill of giant whales swimming right under my boat, waking to their songs, escaping from sharks, and even getting hit by the occasional flying fish! I know this row will be a challenge of a lifetime and my body will be tested to the limit, but I am excited to see ocean life in all its majestic glory and experience its boundless natural beauty.
Rowers participating in this completely unsupported row will not have easy access to emergency dispatchers in the middle of the ocean. The race demands its participants to be in prime mental and physical condition. As the organizer of the race, Atlantic Campaigns provides structure, guidance, and training and safety guidelines to ensure teams take the necessary precautions required to tackle an ocean row. Since 2012, Atlantic Campaigns has organized the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge and its team has over 50 years of combined ocean rowing experience.
